One of the most time consuming parts of setting up a new site is finding keywords that have little competition. If you've read my last post on choosing keywords you see that I typically use number of searches returned with my keyword in the title or I do a search with my keywords in quotes. I usually stay away from keywords with more than 7,000 competitors.
The problem with competition is that you don't really know how good it is unless you analyze each site. Which means you may actually have no trouble competing for hig volume , high competition keywords if the competition not really any good.
That's where I use Traffic Travis.
Traffic Travis is a keyword tool I use (no cost, there is paid verison but the no cost version is fine to start) to analyze my competition. I have used this on every new site I've built since joining Google Sniper and it's quite a time saver.
Traffic Travis does everything else you would expect a keyword tool to do but it has two really special features that I love. First it will analyze your competition for your keyword phrase and tell you how easy or difficult it will be to rank for that keyword phrase. This has allowed me to compete and rank in niches where my typical methods would have stopped me at more than 7,000 competitors.
Where I used to restrict myself to low competition phrase like "golf club distance" or "Sea salt bath", that usually also had less than 10,000 searches, I now have found very high search volume phrases with lot's of competition, but the competition is so weak it's still easy to rank. I recently ranked for a phrase that Google search said had 2.3 million competitors using my phrase in quotes. I only went after that phrase because Traffic Travis told me it would be easy to rank. And it was.
I'm currently ranking for a phrase that has over 1 million searches a month with 5 miliion competitors. I would have never even attempted that if Traffic Travis hadn't told me it would be easy to rank.
The other really cool feature is that Traffic Travis will analyze any sites you already have built and grade you on how well your content, etc. matches your keyword phrase. This is great indicator of where you will end up in the SERPs., even if you intially rank low. It's important to realize that sites done correctly will eventually rank high, and once you have them right you shouldn't mess with them, just let Google do it's thing.
